SHOOT THEM TROUBLES WITH VARMINT'S EITTRIS! Your prsonal guide to overcoming hassles and problems with Varmint's EITtris version 1.30 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I want to mess around with the configurations. - Great! Edit EITTRIS.CFG. It is self-documenting. You can play around with all kinds of stuff in there, like what music gets played, music volume, game speed, play options, etc... You should know, however, that if you make any changes to play options, high scores will be disabled. I get the #1 high score, but the game doesn't tell me the secret code to enter it on the web page. - Your computer is too slow. People with slow computers can get high scores too easily, so I disabled the web high score option for slower computers. Generally speaking, if you have a 50 Mhz 486 or better, your computer should be fast enough for high scores. EITtris crashes! What do I do? - It might be the graphics. EITtris uses VESA SVGA graphics, and some cards do a terrible job of implementing the VESA standard. There are three tings you can try: 1) edit EITTRIS.CFG and uncomment the "HIRES" line. This will try to run EITtris in 1024x768 graphics mode. For some reason there are some cards out there that can handle 1024x768, but not 800x600. 2) Try downloading a great shareware program called UNIVBE. It has been known to fix a lot of problems. The web site for it is: http://www.scitechsoft.com/univbe.html 3) Try talking to your video card vendor. They might have a video BIOS upgrade available. - It might be your sound card. EITtris uses only Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster compatable sound cards. Try these things: 1) Make sure your BLASTER environment variable is set, and that it is set correctly. Type 'set' at the DOS prompt and look for a variable called 'BLASTER'. If you don't see one, you'll need to add a line for it in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. e.g. If your Sound Blaste uses I/O address 220h, IRQ 5, DMA channel 1, and is a SB2.0 or better, this line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT should work fine: set BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3 The T part indicates the level of sound blaster you have. T4 = SBPro2.0, T5=ProMCV, T6=SB16 2) Edit EITtris.cfg and uncomment SBVERSIONFIX. This forces EITtris to assume your have the oldest (most compatable) type of Sound Blaster card. 3) If #1 or #2 don't help, probably the only thing you can do is edit eittris.cfg and uncomment either the PCSOUND or NOSOUND paramters. Hey, I'm not getting any sound from my sound card when I play EITtris! - Edit EITtris.cfg and make sure that the NOSOUND and PCSOUND options are not uncommented. - If you are running WIN95, make sure there are no other applications open that use the sound blaster, or try running EITtris in DOS compatability mode. I can't play my favorite MOD's and S3M's in EITtris! - EITtris has only a limited ammount of memory for modules. When you run EITtris, look in the ABOUT... section to see the largest music file size that you can load. (Actually, multiply that number by about 0.65 to get the file size of the largest module you can load. ie: 180KB is really 180 * .65 = 117 Kb) Booting from a "clean" DOS boot disk is usually a good way to free up some more of the memory space under 640Kb. Holy Cow this is a great game! I can't possibly send you enough money! - That's OK. $50 will do. My favorite S3M sounds like $##$#%! - Varmint's Audio tools (VAT) generally does very well at playing back MOD's and S3M's faithfully, but at this point, it is possible there is still a bug or two lurking in there. Please email me and tell me where I can get the offending module. - There are a few sound systems that aren't happy with VAT. In that case, I apologize, and suggest that you run EITtris with the PC speaker. Later versions should be better at the sound stuff. My midi files don't work with EITtris any more! - That's 'cause I took out the midi code to make more room for MOD's and S3M's. The midi stuff sounded bad anyway. The game is slow and jerky. - If you are on a slow computer (486/33 or less), you might want to chop the SAMPLERATE parameter in ivan.cfg down to 11000, or you could just choose PC sounds. - If you are on a really slow computer (386/16), then you have my condolences. New, low-end Pentium motherboards run around $200. I type "eddie2" and nothing happens! - Isn't that interesting...
